When Gabriel returned from the grocery store, he found Elle in the kitchen... cooking? Wasn't it her nap time? And what was she cooking?
"Elle.. you are up and.. cooking " he said, but it sounded more like a question.
"You're back" she went to hug him and put a tender kiss on his cheek. "Did you get me what I asked for?" , going back to what she was doing.
"Yes.., I got you the ice-cream, your favorite too" he answered as he started unpacking the groceries,"You didn't tell me why you're up during your nap time and WHY are you cooking?"
"I don't know, I couldn't sleep, so I thought I would come down here and try make those baked potatoes. Noah said he likes so much " she said as she continued putting everything she needed on the kitchen counter.
"Yeah, I remember he kept ordering these whenever we ate out… But Elle.." he trailed off, not knowing exactly what to say. She didn't know how to cook and as this was their child who was going to eat it, he had to watch out for his safety. A child's health is a father's first priority
"But what? Are you saying that I can't cook, that I’m not a good mother?" she replied angrily and a bit louder than she had intended.
Gabriel didn't know where the "not good mother talk" came from, as not being able to cook had nothing to do with being a mother but he thought it was better to dodge the whole thing since Elle seemed upset. "No, honey, that wasn't what I was going to say, at all. It's just that baked potatoes are a side dish and I'm wondering what the main one will be." He tried to sound as sincere as he could and gave her his sweet smile.
"Oh," she said with no anger in her voice, "I'm sorry, come here." She gave him a peck " All better now?"
"Yes," he said and nodded. "So what do you want for the dinner? I got some fresh meat, I could make steak."
"That sounds good. Now can you go work and let me finish what I am doing?" she told him cheekily.
"Yes Ma'am " he said, giving her a quick kiss and going to his office in the next room.
Gabriel usually fixed the watches at home, even though he got a new shop when they moved to Costa Verda. But he had found that leaving Elle home alone (with Noah) most of the time wasn't a good idea, so he'd hired Lyle to take care of the shop when he was home. That poor kid, his parents practically forgot that he existed. They didn't even notice when he slept at their house.
Gabriel got soaked up in the watch he was fixing until Elle's loud cursing snapped him out of it. It took him less than a second to know why she was cursing, he could smell it with his nose. She burnt the potatoes and he couldn't deny the smugness he felt. He loved her and wished her luck, but the kitchen was his territory (that he enjoyed having) and she shouldn't try to mess with that.
"Elle, babe, what happened? Are you okay?" he said as he rushed into the kitchen, trying to hide the smugness and sound worried as much as he could. Times like these made him thank god she couldn't read his mind or detect his white lies.
"I burnt the damn potatoes and no, I’m not okay. I wanted to make a surprise for Noah, cook for him like all other mothers do," she informed him as her eyes teared up.
There was nothing to be smug about anymore. "But you are better than the other moms," he wasn't lying now, it was probably the sincerest thing he'd said to her all day. "You know my mother was a good cook but we both know what kind of mother she was."
Elle was smiling now, moved closer and hugged him "So do you need help making the dinner Mr. Gray?"
"Yes, why not, Mrs. Gray." Gabriel thought it was a good idea, them cooking together, doing a couple activity ( other than the one they do in the bedroom ).
But actually, it turned out to be a bad idea (the worst actually), as he kept getting distracted by Elle. She looked hot in that apron (like really hot) and it wasn't his fault that the steaks got burnt while they were making out. It was Elle's fault (he kept telling himself that). It was her idea in the first place and thus her fault (he knew how screwed up his reasoning was, but he was too proud to admit it.)
"So now what are we going to do, Mrs. Gray? Noah will be back from his soccer practice soon." He didn't sound as amused as he was five minutes ago
"We could just order pizza from the place down the street, it won't take much time to get here, plus Noah loves it ." She was moving closer to him now. "What do you think of that, Mr. Gray," she said, sounding too amused, like she was happy his cooking got burnt too.
He nodded "Mr. Gray agrees!"
"Great, now Mr. Gray shall we get back to what we were doing?"
"We shall indeed!"

I loved reading this. It made me feel all warm and happy inside. Haha.
It's so like Gabriel to get smug about being a better cook and i love how that smugness disappeared when Elle teared up. Sweet!
